LEAGUE FOR SPIRITUAL DISCOVERY TIMELINE 1920 (October 22) Timothy Leary was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. 1960 (Summer) Leary, at the time a PhD and psychology lecturer at Harvard University, ingested psychedelic mushrooms while on vacation in Mexico. 1960-1963 The Harvard Psilocybin Project conducted a series of experiments by giving psilocybin to volunteers. 1961 Leary ingested the powerful psychedelic LSD-25 for the first time. The Harvard Psilocybin Project began to substitute LSD for psilocybin in some of its experiments. 1962-1963 Leary, his Harvard colleague Richard Alpert, and other members of the Harvard Psilocybin Project established the International Federation for Internal Freedom (IFIF) as a not-for-profit organization that sought to continue the group’s research on psychedelics in a mystical and religious direction. 1963 Leary and Alpert were dismissed from the Harvard faculty.…

NEO-AMERICAN CHURCH TIMELINE 1928 (April 17):  Arthur J. Kleps was born in New York City. 1960:  High school and prison psychologist Arthur (Art) Kleps and his wife Sally first experimented with the psychedelic substance mescaline and had transformative experiences. 1963 (November 1):  The Neo-American Church (NAC) was founded by Kleps and incorporated in California. 1963 (December):  After reading an account of psychedelic researchers Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert moving to the Hitchcock estate in Millbrook, NY, Kleps wrote to Leary and was invited to visit for the first of many times. 1964 (Winter):  Kleps was fired from his job as a school psychologist for distributing a memo he had written suggesting that marijuana use was not dangerous. BROTHERHOOD OF ETERNAL LOVE TIMELINE 1965 (Fall):  John Griggs robbed a Hollywood producer of LSD. He used the psychedelic drug for the first time shortly thereafter. 1966 (October 11):  Brotherhood of Eternal Love registered as a church in California, with LSD used as a sacrament. 1966 (December):  Brotherhood would move to Laguna Beach after a fire burned down their church in Modjeska Canyon 1968 (December):  The United States Senate amended the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to ban LSD from use. 1968 (December 26):  Timothy Leary was arrested in Laguna Beach for marijuana possession. 1969 (August 26):  John Griggs died of what many believed to be an overdose; he was twenty-five years old. 1970 (September 12)  Leary broke out of prison, with the help of the group the Weather Underground.…

SIDDHA YOGA TIMELINE 1908:  Swami Muktananda (birth name, Krishna), known to his followers simply as Baba, was born in Karnataka State, India. 1923:  At age fifteen, Muktananda, then Krishna, first saw his future Guru Bhagavan Nityananda, and soon after left home in search of a spiritual life. 1947:  Muktananda received Shaktipat (spiritual initiation) from his Guru Bhagawan Nityananda. Over the next decade Muktananda spent his time living and meditating in a small hut in the village of Yeola, Maharashtra. 1956:  Bhagawan Nityananda gave Muktananda a small parcel of land a few kilometres from his own ashram where Muktananda built a small hut with and cultivated a rose garden. 1961 (August 8):  Muktananda’s Guru, Bhagawan Nityananda, died.
