Jonathan Loar completed his M.A. in Religious Studies at the University of Virginia in 2007 and Ph.D. in West and South Asian Religions at Emory University in 2016. His dissertation focused on the life and legacy of Shirdi Sai Baba with an emphasis on hagiography in print and film.
