Heather Shearer

Heather Shearer holds a PhD in Composition and Cultural Rhetoric from Syracuse University (2009), where her specialty was organizational communication, technical writing, and activity theory. Currently she is a professor of rhetoric and writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz and co-edits the university’s research magazine, Inquiry@UC Santa Cruz. Her writings on Peoples Temple can be found at Alternative Considerations of Jonestown and Peoples Temple and her article “‘Verbal Orders Don’t Go—Write It!’: Building and Maintaining the Promised Land,” was published in Nova Religio 22, no. 2 (November 2018): 68–92. She has also presented on the organizational communication of Peoples Temple at the Annual Association of Teachers of Technical Writing (ATTW) conference and the Biennial Conference of the Rhetoric Society of America (RSA).
