Marloes Janson

Marloes Janson is Reader in West African Anthropology and Associate Director of Research at SOAS University of London. She holds a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Leiden University, the Netherlands. Her research is at the intersection of anthropology and religion, and the Gambia and Nigeria are her areas of ethnographic specialization. Her monograph Religious Assemblages in Lagos (working title) is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. Her monograph, Islam, Youth, and Modernity in the Gambia: The Tablighi Jamaʻat (Cambridge University Press for the International African Institute, 2014) was awarded the RAI Amaury Talbot Prize for African Anthropology. Janson’s publications include a special issue of Africa, co-edited with Birgit Meyer, titled “Studying Islam and Christianity in Africa: Moving Beyond a Bifurcated Field” (2016). Her collaboration with Nigerian award-winning photographer Akintunde Akinleye resulted in the travelling photo exhibition The Spiritual Highway: Religious World making in Megacity Lagos (2014), and a photo essay in Material Religion: The Journal of Objects, Art and Belief (2015). Janson holds a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
