Erica Baffelli

Erica Baffelli  is currently a Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of Manchester. Before joining the University of Manchester, she was Senior Lecturer in Asian Religions at the University of Otago (New Zealand) and visiting researcher at Hosei University (Tokyo) as post-doctoral research fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She is particularly interested in religion in contemporary Japan, with a focus on groups founded from the 1970s onwards. Currently she is examining the interactions between media and  “new religions” (shinshūkyō) in 1980s and 1990s Japan and changes in the use of media by religious institutions after the 1995 Tokyo subway attack. Recent publications include  Japanese Religions on the Internet: Innovation, Representation, and Authority  (co-edited with Ian Reader and Birgit Staemmler, London and New York: Routledge, 2011) and a co-edited special issue of the Japanese Journal of Religious Studies (2012) with Ian Reader on the impact and aftermath of the Aum Affair in Japan and beyond.
