Susan (Sue) M. Kenyon is Professor Emerita of Anthropology from Butler University, where she taught from 1995-2008. She previously taught at Valparaiso University, University of Indiana (Indianapolis), and University of Delaware. She first went to Sudan as a high school teacher in Wad Medani from 1965-6 with Voluntary Service Overseas (UK). Later, 1979-85, she and her family lived in Blue Nile Province (Sennar), Darfur (Nyala), and Omdurman, when her husband was seconded to the Sudanese Veterinary Service. Since that time, she has made return visits in 1989, 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2013. She has published numerous articles about Sudan (particularly women’s lives); is the editor of The Sudanese Woman (1985 Ithaca Press); and is the author of Five Women of Sennar: Culture and Change in Central Sudan (1991 Clarendon Press, Oxford; 2004 2nd edition, Waveland Press) and Spirits and Slaves in Central Sudan: the Red Wind of Sennar (2012 Palgrave McMillan).
